CONCEPT

Nice Monster created this stop motion animation and puppet film series for UN environment programme. The story and theme illustrate the importance of nature for a healthy sustainable future for humanity. The series is split into four short animated films – Climate, Economy, Health & Food. The films are structured around a building, a visual metaphor of the planet. In each room lives a different species each having to deal with the cracking walls and crumbling ceilings. As the series progresses the residents embrace nature, in turn fixing the building and living in harmony.

MAKING OF

Nice Monster’s art direction was to make the film feel innocent, similar to a vintage children’s tv show. Mixing media, sometimes traditional puppetry, sometimes stop motion. Adding additional digital animation in post production to enhance facial emotions.

HUMAN PUPPETS

The puppets were constructed using a sweet and simple technique, using springs and wooden balls as the structure and clay moulded to add extra details like noses and ears. After painting the eyebrows and eyelids were added from plasticine so we could easily animate and manipulate the emotions. Their wigs are delicately made of felt as were their clothes.

ANIMAL PUPPETS

The animal puppets were also constructed in a very simple way – each animal featured in the animation is in danger of extinction in the very near future so it was important to expose them as the lead characters in the production.
